Modern UI Without React: HTMX + Alpine

When people say “modern UI,” they often immediately mean React or another SPA framework. I do not think that is the right test.

Users usually care about things like:

• fast response
• smooth partial updates
• clear loading feedback
• low interaction friction

A surprising amount of that can be delivered with HTMX and Alpine.js.

What HTMX Handles

HTMX keeps browser-server interaction simple.

• partial HTML replacement
• form submission
• polling
• out-of-band updates

That means I can build interaction without moving the whole product into a frontend application shell.

What Alpine.js Handles

Alpine.js is ideal for small local state.

• toggles
• modals
• tabs
• lightweight client-side interaction

The key appeal is that I do not need a large frontend framework just to manage modest UI state.

Why I Like the Combination

HTMX and Alpine create a useful balance.

• the server stays responsible for data and major state
• the browser handles lightweight interaction
• HTML remains central

That shape works especially well with Django. Templates, routing, forms, and permissions all stay on one main axis.

To me, modern UI is not about the size of the client bundle or the trendiness of the framework. It is about how little friction the user feels. On that measure, HTMX + Alpine is absolutely capable of feeling modern.
